Base Engineering for Douglas County Soils

The foundation determines how long your driveway lasts. Castle Rock sits on the Dawson Arkose formation, a fine-grained sandstone that can shift with seasonal moisture changes. We install 6-8 inch aggregate bases compacted in layers to create a stable foundation that flexes with ground movement without cracking the asphalt above. Proper base preparation costs more upfront but prevents the settling and cracking that plague driveways built on inadequate bases.

Drainage Design for Colorado Snowmelt

Douglas County receives significant snow most winters, which means spring snowmelt. We grade every driveway to direct water away from the home’s foundation and prevent pooling that accelerates pavement deterioration. Proper drainage also prevents ice dams in low spots during winter freeze-thaw cycles. We evaluate the natural slope of your property and design the driveway grade to work with it, not against it.

Asphalt Specifications That Last

We install 3-inch compacted asphalt thickness as standard on residential driveways. For driveways that will support heavier vehicles or RVs, we recommend 4 inches. The asphalt is installed in two lifts—a base course and a wearing course—each compacted with professional rollers to proper density. Proper compaction prevents rutting and early deterioration from vehicle weight and Colorado’s temperature swings.

New Asphalt Driveway vs. Overlay

If you have an existing asphalt driveway, you might wonder whether overlay makes sense versus complete replacement.

New driveway installation makes sense when:

  • Your existing driveway has widespread cracking or base failure
  • The current driveway has poor drainage causing repeated problems
  • You’re changing the driveway width, layout, or grade
  • The existing asphalt is 20+ years old with significant deterioration

Asphalt overlay may work if:

  • The existing driveway has minor surface cracks but a stable base
  • Drainage is adequate with no standing water or ice buildup
  • The current thickness and grade work well for your needs
  • You’re looking to extend the life 7-10 more years before full replacement

We’ll assess your existing driveway and give you honest pricing for both options so you can make an informed decision.
